I recently purchased a book of photojournalism from 2002. Inside, surrounded by pictured of soldiers in Iraq and pictures of 9/11 was this picture.
This controversial image made headlines, mostly for the ethical dilemma behind publishing a sexual crime photo without the victim’s consent. She still hasn’t come forward. No one’s been arrested. Mike Urban, a Seattle Post-Intelligencer photographer, captured the assault from a fire escape when covering Seattle’s Mardi Gras. He reportedly watched men with the customary beads and pleas cajole young women to show their tits. When this one refused, they swarmed, stripped her and took private parts into their own hands.
This image illustrates perfectly how objectification is a genuine threat to women everywhere and how words can easily become actions that can’t be taken back. The men in this picture look like nice young men, with decent jobs and caring families, the expressions on their faces are not expressions of malice but of frivolity. They appear unaware that they are destroying the life and happiness of another human.
